The Departments of Informatics and Telecommunications and Physics, the School of Sciences, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Electrical Engineering and Technology of Computers and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras will organize and operate from the academic year 2019-2020 the Postgraduate Postgraduate Program entitled "SPACE TECHNOLOGIES, APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES" (Space Technologies, Applications and SeRvices - STAR)".
The establishment and approval of "STAR" are set out in FEK Β’ 1437, 24 April 2019.
The secretarial and administrative support of the Program is undertaken by the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens.
The sector of space technologies, applications and services has made significant progress in recent years both within the European Union and globally. In Europe in particular, Galileo (for navigation) and Copernicus (for observation of the earth) space programs combined with the new generation of Sentinel satellites have created a new frame of reference offering major opportunities for research, creation, innovation and development of new technologies , applications and services to both the public and the private sector. This framework is further enhanced by the European Union Space Policy (EUSP) and the European Space Agency (ESA) and their jointly supported actions, such as the Horizon Europe. In Greece, space science has in recent years shown considerable growth with a significant number of public and private sector players to demonstrate significant research, industrial and commercial activities related to space technologies, applications and services. The Hellenic Space Center (HSC) is shaping a new reality as it is expected that increased priority will be given to space technology research and development as well as space applications and services, aiming among other things to strengthen the national economy, to shield defense, transport safety, modernization of shipping, strengthening of the national micro-credit program, aeronautical monitoring and surveillance, monitoring of the environment (eg earthquakes, floods, forestry, floods, floods, floods, floods, floods, floods, floods, floods, floods, floods, fires) to protect citizens, modernize public administration, and provide services to society as a whole. In this context, business and academia in the field will be supported, and cooperation with the European Union and the ESA will be stepped up with a view to exploiting the available funds, geo-returns and space programs that are being developed.
The STAR Teachers are faculty members and experienced postdoctoral researchers who belong to or collaborate with organizations that excel and innovate in space technologies, applications and services through their multiannual presence in high-level research and development projects.
